  • Son of the late J.W. and Audrey Chavis of Marlboro County
  • Married to Denise Chavis of Hartsville for 25 years. Together they have three children - Erica (31), Kirsten (23) and Jackson (11) Two Grandchildren, the late Julian Chavis and Wyatt Ayers
Education
  • Graduated from Wallace High School in 1985
  • Attended S.C. State University (1985-86), where he played football
  • Graduated from S.C. Criminal Justice Academy in 1989
  • Tony has also furthered his education, earning numerous leadership and management certifications in law enforcement
Military Service
  • U.S. Marine Corps Reserves (1986-92). Assigned to Company D 8th Tank Battalion in Columbia
  • Veteran of Operation Desert Storm (Nov. 1990 to May 1991)
Law Enforcement Experience
  • Chesterfield County Sheriff’s Department - Deputy (Jan. 1988-89)
  • S.C. Highway Patrol (Feb. 1989 - Feb. 2016). Assigned to Horry County (1989-91). Transferred to Darlington County in May 1991, after returning from Operation Desert Storm. Promoted to Corporal in March 2000. Promoted to Sergeant in March 2003 in Darlington and Marlboro counties. Promoted to First Sergeant and Post Commander in Sept. 2007 over Darlington and Marlboro counties. Promoted to Lieutenant and Executive Officer over Post A and B (Darlington, Dillon, Florence, Marion and Marlboro counties) in August 2012
  • Elected Sheriff, Darlington County, 2016
